GFB 3001 ATOMIC SINGLE STAGE BOOST CONTROLLER

Description

Boasting a repeatable and stable boost curve, quick rise rate, and unbeatable value, GFB’s Atomic has earned a reputation as being one of the most reliable and effective manual boost controllers on the market.

It is important to note that the Atomic does NOT use a “ball-and-spring” system like others on the market, for very good reason. The ball-and-spring system is an attempt to increase the boost rise rate by preventing pressure from reaching the wastegate during spool up. However, in practice this method usually creates boost spiking and a less stable and repeatable boost curve.

Instead, the Atomic uses a precision orifice and needle valve system to accurately bleed pressure from the wastegate line to increase boost. With no moving parts, this system is ultimately more reliable and stable.

For use with any type of petrol/gasoline or diesel turbocharger system using a traditional pneumatic wastegate (internal or external).

GFB Atomic: Case Study

The Atomic Boost Controller was tested on an MY02 Subaru WRX (whose only mods were a turbo-back exhaust) back-to-back with the factory controller.  A base-line power run was performed with the factory boost control, and the boost level was measured at the same time.  The Atomic was then installed and set to the same peak boost level of 0.9bar (13.2 psi) so that the spool-up time could be accurately compared before and after the installation.

The dyno graph shows the Atomic boost curve in green, and the factory curve in blue. 4th gear is used for both tests, and proof that the Atomic was set to the same peak level is seen towards the end of the chart as the two curves meet.  However, notice the massive gains down low in the rev range, as much as 18kW (23.4hp) AT THE WHEELS!

This increase in power shows that the Atomic allows the boost to rise significantly earlier than the factory controller, which on the road represents much better acceleration from a whopping 1700RPM earlier in the rev range.  All this WITHOUT exceeding the factory peak boost level, and for a pocket-money price!

Atomic Boost Control Dyno Graph

It is important to note that the MY01-02 (MY02-03 in the US, GDA chassis) model responds very well to this modification, because the factory boost mapping is very conservative in an attempt to keep the torque curve flat and the power delivery linear (which totally kills the feeling that you are driving a turbo!).  Note of course that boost can be increased above the factory level for more power gains, but the purpose of this experiment was only to show the improved spool-up potential on this particular model WRX.

So, if you want your GDA WRX to REALLY feel lively, fit an Atomic or Reactor boost controller for the best “bang-for-your-buck” modification you can make!

Please Note

Any form of boost control should be considered a tuning tool rather than a bolt-on power adder, and therefore adjustments should be done with knowledge of the limits of the engine/turbo to maximize the performance gains and reliability from using this product.

GFB Manual Boost Controller Features:

  • REPEATABLE AND STABLE BOOST CURVE
  • 100% RELIABILITY, ZERO MAINTENANCE
  • EASY TO INSTALL IN MINUTES
  • EASY TO ADJUST, SET-AND-FORGET
  • PRECISION NEEDLE VALVE BLEED SYSTEM, MORE STABLE THAN “BALL-AND-SPRING” TYPES
  • MANUFACTURED IN AUSTRALIA IN ACCORDANCE WITH ISO 9001

Manual Boost Controllers may lack the extra features of an EBC (Electronic Boost Controller), but they get the job done!

When you need simple, reliable, set-and-forget boost control, a Manual Boost Controller is hard to beat. Installation is as simple as connecting a couple of hoses, and setup is as easy as turning the adjustment until you hit your target. Once that’s done, you can forget about it and drive your car. Being a rugged, mechanical device, it will never vary or fail, no matter how much abuse you can throw at it.

Our Manual Boost Controllers are available in two types, one is suited for conventional pneumatic wastegates, and the other is for use with vacuum-actuated VNT (Variable Nozzle Turbine)/VGT (Variable Geometry Turbine) turbos that are commonly used on diesel engines.

Valuable Information Before You Purchase

  • DV+

    DV+

When you want no noise, no nonsense, just performance

European manufacturers are pushing their engines to the limit. Get a DV to match.

GFB's DV+ diverter valve range offers a direct-fit performance solution for the weak factory diverter valves used on many modern vehicles. By retaining the factory ECU control and recirculating the vented air, the DV+ is a purely performance-orientated product.

GFB’s DV+ design solves the longevity and boost leaking issues that are common with factory diverter valves, and also changes the operation method to “pilot actuation” to ensure better performance on stock or modified engines.

Furthermore, these benefits won’t cost you the Earth! Rather than throwing the entire factory diverter valve system in the bin (like other manufacturer’s “solutions”), the DV+ keeps what works and replaces what doesn’t. It retains the factory solenoid and ECU control to ensure simple installation and reliable operation.

  • VTA

    VTA

    Performance and Sound!

VTA blow-off valves are constructed with the same materials and valve mechanism as the DV+, and they offer the exact same performance and boost holding. However, venting to atmosphere gives it the signature blow-off sound, whilst the DV+ keeps things quiet.

Competitors' products for the same vehicles that make sound (i.e. BOV "Spacers") typically retain the performance deficiencies of the factory diverter valve, delete the ECU control, or require frequent maintenance and rebuilds. The VTA on the other hand is the complete package - performance, fit, reliability, and sound!

Like the DV+, GFB’s VTA range of BOVs utilise GFB’s proven TMS Technology to ensure rapid boost recovery on gearshift and optimum throttle response, as well as superior boost holding. However, where the DV+ and the VTA range differ is what they do with the vented air. VTA BOVs vent to atmosphere to make the signature turbo blow-off sound, where the DV+ recirculates the air to keep it quiet.

Each valve in the VTA range is designed specifically for the applications we list them for, ensuring the best fit and performance. Most of the VTA range are designed for use on cars with solenoid type factory diverter valves, and in those cases the VTA kit will retain the solenoid and ECU control. Like the DV+ though, it replaces the weak factory valve internals to ensure strength and reliability, especially in high boost applications.

Other versions of the VTA are designed for use on cars that do not have any kind of factory fitted diverter valve. Vehicle manufacturers have deleted the troublesome solenoid type diverter valve from some of the newer models, but this leads to turbo compressor surge which can be taxing on the turbo in the long run. The VTA valves for these cars are designed to re-introduce the function of a diverter/blow-off valve to help protect the turbo in the long term and provide a blow-off sound.

  • DVX

    DVX

    Performance with Volume Control

If you’re looking for the performance benefits and fit of a DV+, but also want an adjustable blow-off sound like the Respons, the DVX is the only choice.

The DVX range covers vehicles that can’t fit or use valves like the Respons or Deceptor Pro II, and each version in the range is designed specifically for its application, ensuring the best fit and performance.

Increased boost holding and throttle response with total volume control!

GFB’s DVX range takes the extremely popular DV+ Diverter Valve performance and fit, then adds our patented Venting Bias Adjustment Systems from the Respons range of valves. This feature allows you to infinitely vary how much air is recirculated, and how much is vented to atmosphere, giving you total control over your blow-off sound – completely adjustable from silent to ear shattering!

The DVX is not just a showy noise maker either. Using GFB’s proven TMS Technology, whilst retaining ECU control, the DVX solves all the performance and reliability issues that are common with factory diverters AND gives you a blow-off sound that’s completely adjustable!

  • Mach 2

    Mach 2

Single Outlet Valve for Recirc or Atmosphere Venting

Simply add an Atmospheric Conversion Kit for maximum noise (available separately).

All the Performance With or Without the Noise!

GFB’s Mach 2 utilises GFB’s proven TMS Technology to ensure rapid boost recovery on gearshift and optimum throttle response, as well as the ability to withstand boost pressures of 100psi+. Put simply, it can hold more boost than any turbo could produce.

With its single venting outlet, the Mach 2 is configured from the factory for full recirculation (i.e. plumb back, diverter, bypass) venting for the performance-minded who just want the benefits without the sound.

  • Hybrid

    Hybrid

Dual Outlet Valve for Combined Recirc and Atmosphere Venting - Three Valves in One!

Want it loud? Quiet? In between? GFB Hybrid kits include a pair of blanking plugs that allow the valve to be configured for full recirculation venting, 50/50 (atmosphere / recirc), or full atmosphere venting.

All the Performance with the Noise!

The Hybrid valve is back! In 1999, GFB’s first Hybrid valve pioneered the dual port design, which was so successful the technology has since been adopted by most other brands. By “staging” the two venting outlets, at low valve lifts most of the air is recirculated. As the car is driven harder, the valve opens further and more of the atmosphere venting port is exposed for a louder sound.

As a benefit, this system makes it possible to use these valves on cars with sensitive airflow meters that often suffer issues such as backfiring and/or stalling, whilst still achieving the signature blow-off sound.

  • RESPONS TMS

    RESPONS TMS

The Evolution of the Dual-Outlet BOV - With or Without Noise

All the performance with or without the noise!

If cars like yours typically suffer issues such as backfiring and stalling when using a fixed-ratio atmosphere-venting BOV, the Respons can help. By adjusting the venting bias to suit the car you can achieve a blow-off sound without having to put up with the issues.

Like all GFB valves, the Respons utilises GFB’s proven TMS Technology to ensure rapid boost recovery on gearshift and optimum throttle response, as well as the ability to withstand boost pressures of 100psi+. Put simply, it can hold more boost than any turbo could produce.

How GFB’s patented venting bias adjustment works

Twisting the adjusting ring opens up the atmo port, whilst the recirc port is simultaneously closed. This results in possible venting ratios ranging from 100% recirc, right through to 100% atmosphere and anywhere in between.
