Inspired by the BMW M4 GTS track car’s flat under floor section that was designed to improve aerodynamics and stability on track, we designed our own version to fit all F82/F83 M4, F80 M3 and F87 M2 Competition models. Like the M4 GTS, our aero under tray fits over the existing reinforcement panel and covers the car’s front section to offer a solid and level floor section that spans to create a low pressure area and reduce drag. Made from 2mm aluminium for strength and finished in black powder coat, it also offers improved protection to the car’s underside. The panel will fit with the original front oil cooler under tray section or with our AIRTEC Motorsport upgraded version. Airtec AIRTEC Motorsport Aluminium Inspection Panel for Honda Civic FK2 Type R
As part of our expanding Honda product range, AIRTEC Motorsport is proud to launch our aluminium inspection panel/under tray for the Civic FK2 Type R. When modifying these cars to increase power and torque, an unavoidable by-product is the additional heat level that’s transferred to the car’s cooling system. During sustained hard use, this can become a substantial issue, as coolant temperatures can increase enough to trigger the ECU’s safety features, reducing torque or even putting the car into a limp mode. As a result, we wanted to address the car’s entire cooling system, which included introducing extra venting to improve air flow within the engine bay. Our solution to creating a direct replacement inspection panel/under tray in 2mm aluminium began with a full 3D scan of the vehicle’s underside to ensure a perfect fitment. As a result, it reuses all original mounting points with new stronger fixings supplied, offering improved strength and protection for the underside of the car. More importantly, the large functional vents actively help to pull warm air from the back of the radiator, down under the engine and into the low-pressure area of the car below the inspection panel/under tray. This effectively creates an increased flow path within the engine bay to transfer heat out, helping to reduce engine running temperatures. Finished in a high-quality black powder coat finish, the inspection panel/under tray offers improved cooling effectiveness as well as strength and durability. What does an under tray do?The under tray has three main purposes: to protect the underside of the vehicle from foreign objects flicking up and causing damage or accelerated wear. Secondly, to improve aerodynamics by creating a low pressure area as air accelerates past its smooth surface. This reduces drag, which works towards improving grip, handling as well as fuel efficiency. Lastly, on performance models, the under tray often provides increased cooling by either venting cold air to, or extracting warm air from the engine bay. Therefore improving the strength, design, size and cooling effect can offer fantastic benefits. Following an extensive development process, AIRTEC Motorsport are proud to launch our oil cooler kit aimed at FK2 Civic Type R owners who require the ultimate cooling package to maintain steady running temperatures on track or fast road use. The ChallengeWhen modifying the FK2 Civic Type R to increase power and torque, an unavoidable by-product is the additional heat level that’s transferred to the car’s cooling system. The SolutionDeveloped in-house at AIRTEC HQ in the UK we designed an oil cooler to help address the cooling issues when pushed hard. This cooler fits neatly behind the fog light (requires removal) and utilises our bespoke CAD-modelled air duct to force cold air through the core. To create a flow path and further improve cooling, air then exits via the inner arch liner (requires cutting). A pre-cut mesh shield is supplied for both the front and rear to protect the radiator from road debris damage. This can fit with our intercooler and auxiliary radiator/turbo cooler to create the ultimate cooling package. The comprehensive kit also features laser-cut and powder-coated brackets, high-quality braided lines with AN fittings as well as all fixtures and fittings, and detailed fitting instructions. Before the auxiliary radiator and oil cooler were installed I would normally get approximately 5 to 6 laps, which is about 8 to 10 minutes of hard use before the oil temperature rose to around the 126 to 128°C. With the coolers installed, I can run at least 10 to 14 laps, which is over 20 minutes of hard use, and oil temperatures don’t normally go above 115°C. The front part of the original undertray on these cars is notoriously weak due to its fibre material construction and as a result is prone to failure over time. Our solution is a direct replacement, three-piece undertray made in aluminium that reuses all of the original mounting points to ensure a perfect and secure fitment. Unlike others on the market, the design of the oil cooler extraction ducting has also been carefully considered to imitate the original in order to maintain sufficient cooling. As a result, the sides of the ducts are enclosed against the oil cooler and the radius of the ducting increased in size. There are also brake duct cut outs to allow the use of a GT4-style splitter with brake cooling ducts. As part of our expanding Honda platform product range, AIRTEC Motorsport is proud to launch our external oil cooler kit for the FL5 Civic Type R, suitable for track or fast road use. With huge experience in developing external oil cooler packages for a variety of modified track and road cars, and aware of the FL5 Type R’s oil cooling issues during track use, the challenge with this kit was to neatly integrate a large capacity, external oil cooler where it could still benefit from direct air flow, whilst integrating seamlessly with the car’s existing fixtures and fittings with no drilling or cutting required. Unlike previous Type R models, mounting the oil cooler in the lower bumper wasn’t possible, so we chose to utilise the upper grille area and opted to design a unique oil cooler in order to make the very most of the limited space available, rather than use a generic off-the-shelf item.
